The Siren, a creature that that is often portrayed to have the same character as a mermaid; the mermaid has a heart-warming tale of falling in love, battling the evil to be with her love, but Siren is a dangerous predatory creature who lured men using their enchanting voices to shipwreck on rocks. In today’s our modern world, there’s a man who has the power to bring a Siren to life, and helped him to win the world championship award in Alternative Hair Show 2019. He is one of the world’s renowned hairdressers; and what makes us proud is that he is a Malaysian – Elvin Soh.
In 2019, Elvin and his team take on a journey travelled to England, to pursue his dream, standing on the stage he has been dreaming of in his life. No one would have thought that he could have his name engraved on the award. He is the first-ever in our history to make it there and he hopes that he could keep the snowball rolling and inspire more and more Malaysians to stand on that stage, winning the same award, chasing after the same dream. The road to your dream isn’t always easy; when you reach an obstacle, turn it into an opportunity. Elvin lived through the sleepless nights; take on pressures, sacrificed his time with the family, but he knows that these efforts would lead him to achieve his dreams, as well as to act as a channel for the inheritance of the art of hairdressing, keeping the legend alive.
We can see the similarity in Elvin and the Siren; both of them are willing to bear through periods of pain in exchange to achieve their dream. In Elvin’s winning work – “The Siren”, besides his own creativity and efforts, his teammates and the model too has contributed toward his winning. In addition to the art piece, the model who wears the artwork carries the role of providing a visual reference, narrating the life story of Siren and leads the audiences to appreciate the essence of the artwork. Elvin requested the model to bring out the good and the evil in Siren. The confrontation of the good and the evil: a good evil or a harmful virtue? These details embedded soul into the art and that makes Elvin’s work exceptional and stand out more than the others. Elvin jokes that the changing and contradicting mood nearly drives her crazy.
It’s a lot of money. The cost to participate in the competition is high. Everything needs money. However, that doesn’t stop Elvin from continuing with what he is doing. Success is not for those who run fast, but for those who keep running and always on the more. Even though he might lose the competition, if he fails, he learns from his error and moves on. In the interview, Elvin shared a story about the oldest participant, a 70-year-old man from Australia. It was his fifth time in the competition, but he never stops trying. It’s quite challenging for an old man to be in the competition. Though dreams have no time limit, it’s never too old to pursue your dream or to dream a new dream. “I am just in my 50s,” Elvin added.
Everyone has a dream deep in their heart, but if five years go by, the voice in your head continues to rattle off the reasons for not to start chasing the dreams, sitting in the cubicle daydreaming, then you are only keeping those dreams just as: dreams. It’s never too late to start chasing dreams, do not limit your imagination. The spectre of Pandora’s Box has always haunted us for years to prevent us from thinking out of the box. Be like the Sirens or mermaids that are willing to leave their comfort zone just to chase after their love. Einstein said that “great spirits have always encountered violent opposition from mediocre minds.” Do not let others prevent you from living your life to the fullest potential. Get rid of distraction, stay focus, your courage will bring you victory.
